The IBM XIV® Storage System Breakthrough Next-generation enterprise-class storage at exceptionally low Total Cost of Ownership

The IBM XIV® Storage System is a revolutionary, easily managed, high-end, open disk system, designed to meet today’s ongoing herculean IT challenges. It is the industry’s first single-architecture storage system, providing the highest level of performance, reliability and features, along with management simplicity and exceptional TCO.

The IBM XIV Storage System delivers excellent business benefits across the board, enabling IT teams to do more, provide better services to enterprise users, and spend less:

  • Built-in virtualization and easy management enable responsive SAN services – giving users what they want and without delay
  • Better performance creates better service organization-wide and reduces efforts in maintaining performance levels
  • Higher availability prevents business lost to downtime

Enabled by its grid architecture and unique redundancy scheme, the XIV system provides unprecedented reliability. These qualities immunize the system against any single failure and reduce the risk of double failure significantly below the standard.

Simplicity is fundamental to the XIV system, literally transforming the experience of storage administrators by reducing the effort of managing and monitoring storage resources. This simplicity is made possible through IBM XIV's true system virtualization, easy to use GUI and CLI, and powerful self-healing.

The IBM XIV Storage System stands apart, architected in its entirety to provide high reliability and performance at strikingly low total cost of ownership. Its ability to offer low TCO is the outcome of several inherent characteristics:

  • A fully virtualized, self-managed, self-healing system that balances load perfectly at all times, optimizing capacity use and minimizing human intervention and error
  • Provided with a built-in features set, including differential snapshots, remote mirroring, and thin provisioning
  • Easily managed through a simple graphical user interface (GUI) that minimizes storage management overhead
  • Built entirely of standard components, including low-cost, very high density slower rotation disks (VHDSR)
  • Enables ,non-disruptive changes to hardware and firmware, without affecting performance and without need for downtime

A single-tier platform based on a grid architecture, for easy scaling

SUCCESS STORIES

Success Story: NaviSite

In a sense, our IT infrastructure is our product, says Mark Clayman, senior vice president of hosting services for NaviSite. “By building a best-in-class delivery platform—storage, service, networking devices and processes and tools—we can offer a level of technology and expertise that most customers can’t easily develop internally.

Success Story: Bezeq International

Bezeq International launched its XIV® storage solution by deploying a single system for peripheral enterprise storage needs. Within a year and a half, it had expanded the solution to four systems—and Overview 300 TB of single-tier storage—and extended its scope to businesscritical applications. Discover how in this whitepaper.

Success Story: VCUHS

VCUHS IT management felt it imperative to standardize on a single vendor. “By then, IBM XIV was available,” Johnson recalls. “We realized that it was either the best stuff since sliced bread or just smoke and mirrors. Our need was great, so we gave it a try. During the proof of concept, we tried every possible stress test we could think of, and in a mixed workload environment. The XIV system either matched or beat the performance on our existing arrays every time.”

Optimizing Enterprise Storage Total Cost of Ownership with IBM XIV

A high-end storage system’s total cost of ownership (TCO) is like an iceberg: the vast majority of costs are hidden from view. Comparing systems by looking at obvious factors, like capacity and box price, may be easier. But taking a fuller look at the factors impacting IT budgets over a system’s lifetime will yield a more accurate TCO assessment and, ultimately, a more informed decision as to which system is truly more favourable to the company's bottom line.

Making the case for migration

This brief describes how Gerber Scientific, working with an IBM storage implementation team, migrated its production SAP applications and Oracle database from an existing proprietary storage infrastructure to the IBM XIV Storage System. IBM Rational Performance Tester was used to simulate the target SAP workloads during the project’s proof of concept (POC) phase. Since completing the migration from the previous storage array, Gerber Scientific has benefitted from the XIV system’s ability to deliver significant increases in application performance as well as substantial operational and cost efficiencies. Today, IBM XIV storage is the company’s exclusive SAP production storage platform.
