Founded in 1998 by serial entrepreneur Vinod Khosla, e-business software maker Asera was a "hot start-up" in 2001 (according to Network World).
Now, of course, the company has bit the dust -- its products and customers purchased by SEEC in January. Asera built supply chain software intended to link company's existing (1980s and 1990s) systems with other companies in e-business schemes. Somewhat ironically, SEEC focuses on older legacy systems, and will use Asera's assets to bring itself up to date.
Asera was a classic late-90s "glamorous" start-up, spending £175 million of venture money in a couple of years. Where did it go? Well, the all-star management line-up didn't come cheap: Asera attracted former Oracle president Ray Lane, Cisco CIO Peter Solvik, Federal Express CIO Robert Carter and Janpieter Scheerder, one-time president of network storage at Sun.
Lesser staff, meanwhile, worked long hours (Asera reserved a wing in the local hotel for them) and believed it was cool to work somewhere where the conference rooms have funky names. Asera conflabs were held in rooms named after the word for "speed" in different languages (try saying "Meet you in Geschwindigkeit in five").
What else is left? Well, two songs, recorded by an un-named executive, form a poignant reminder of just how pathetic the dot-com romance was. "Like Kevin Spacey rapping," said one IT Anthems fan. The song name-checks a lot of other senior execs, and will no doubt appear on their CVs.
